LONG WALK

SYNOPSIS

During the Civil War, violence not only ravaged the eastern states but the western frontier as well. The Navajo Nation was under siege by the US government who coveted their rich lands for new American settlements. The army unleashed devastating campaigns of human bloodshed, livestock slaughter and crop burning to remove the Indians from their homesteads. But even this could not end the fierce Native resistance. Colonel Christopher "Kit" Carson was enlisted to relocate the remaining 8,000 Navajo men, women and children on a grueling 300 mile march clear across New Mexico. This is known as the "Long Walk”. Upon their arrival, disease and starvation had wiped out over a quarter of the entire tribe. LONG WALK is based on the true story of a reluctant hero in Kit Carson – who sympathized with the Indians, but whose military duty forced him to scourge their home – and, above all, it is a triumphant testament to the Navajo spirit. It was through their own self-determination that they ultimately regained a 3.5 million acre reservation, which to this day includes their mother country.

A story that needs to be told.
